Show Me The Evidence: Before Process Improvement – Is It Best Practice?

Problem: While process management is well established in quality departments, underutilization of evidence-based practice (EBP) modalities leads to a continued struggle with a now 15-year gap in research being brought to clinical practice. The establishment of a core of EBP experts collaborating with PI teams is crucial for best practice implementation.

Measurement: This presentation will be a conceptual share with a case study style. This is a well-studied concept by Helene Fuld Health Trust National Institute for Evidence-based Practice in Nursing and Healthcare with significant research from the team lead by Bernadette Melnyk, PhD.

Analysis: EBP is a seven-step process of rigorous best evidence locating, analysis, and implementation strategy starting with organizational assessment that achieves the Quadruple (even a future Quintuple) Aim. Through evaluation of best evidence practice, process improvement achieves the goals of  safety, cost, and patinet/clinician outcomes.

Implementation: Through multiple implementations, CLABSI, CAUTI, HAPI, falls as well as service line specific initiatives around readmissions, transitions of care, communication, EBP has demonstrated best clinical practice which leads directly to best patient outcomes, safety metrics, and cost considerations. One step of the EBP process considers facilitators, barriers, and implementation strategy.

Results/Discussion: The merging of an EPB expert into every process improvement initiative leads to clinical practice initiatives representing an accurate assessment of best practice and up-to-date evidence. Through participation in quality groups system-wide, a team of EBP consultants can be attached to every project team ensuring continued success and optimized outcomes.
