Utilizing Value Management System to Optimize Performance

Tool: Value Management System

Problem: Sustaining and spreading the use of a new tool throughout an organization is a challenge. Once the initial training is complete what systems are needed to maintain the gains,  support the change, and spread the methodology.

Tool Selection: Value Management System is a framework to continuously improve value by reducing cost and improving quality. It consists of three components: box score measures around performance, capacity and finance, Visual Management Board and Weekly Huddles. Units use PDSA to develop small test of change around key measures on the scorecard.

Usage: Measures for the box score are selected by considering how their team contributes to the organizations overall strategic priorities. Metrics are updated weekly and posted on a visual board.  Data is analyzed and presented at staff weekly huddles. PDSA are developed for small test of change.

Results: Units have seen a decrease in turn around time for units being transferred out of NICU, increase in SAT/SBT screening compliance, increase in I/O frequency documentation, and decrease cost per patient. Critical to our success was the collaboration between Clinical Transformation, IHI, Unit, Quality & Data Analytics.
