Vice President of Quality and Regulatory Affairs – Mount Sinai Health System

LeWanza M. Harris, MD, MPH, MBA, MS is the Vice President of Quality and Regulatory Affairs for the Mount Sinai Health System. In this role, she provides strategic leadership and oversight for all clinical quality functions across the Health System to achieve organizational goals related to clinical excellence, regulatory compliance and quality management. A highly respected transformational physician leader, Dr. Harris has a proven track record of driving system-wide efficiencies and improvements; standardizing and aligning models of care; and streamling processes and operations in risk management, quality, safety, and regulatory affairs. She has led several initiatives to success in clinical risk management, readmissions, regulatory compliance, infection prevention & control, and surgical and procedural safety, ambulatory quality and patient safety, and opioid management.

Prior to Mount Sinai, LeWanza Harris served as the Associate Chief Quality Officer for NewYork-Presbyterian/Ambulatory Care Network and MCIC Vermont Associate Chief Quality Officer/Associate Chief Medical Officer for NewYork-Presbyterian, one the nation’s most comprehensive academic healthcare delivery systems. She concurrently served as the Liaison to the Weill Cornell Physician Organization and ColumbiaDoctors Faculty Practice Organization.

She was responsible for strategic leadership, alignment, and implementation of quality and patient safety initiatives. She also engaged medical staff to collaboratively define and implement risk reduction strategies and ensure alignment of both organizations’ patient safety and loss prevention strategic goals. During her tenure, she led several initiatives to success in team training, clinical risk management, readmissions, regulatory compliance, infection prevention & control, and surgical and procedural safety, ambulatory quality and patient safety, and opioid management. Prior to these roles, Dr. Harris served as Associate Chief Quality Officer of NewYork-Presbyterian/Allen Hospital.

Dr. Harris is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, the National Medical Association, the National Association of Health Services Executives, and Healthcare Leaders of New York. She is a committee member of the National American Heart Association Business Committee and National American Heart Association Quality Healthcare Certification Science Committee. Dr. Harris has previously served on the American Heart Association, NYC Board of Directors.

A board-certified family medicine physician, Dr. Harris was an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, Center for Community and Family Medicine. She received her Doctor of Medicine and Master of Public Health from the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry. She completed her residency in Family Medicine at University of Rochester/Highland Family Medicine. She completed the Greater New York Hospital Association/United Hospital Fund Clinical Quality Fellowship. Dr. Harris was also a Ruth L. Kirchstein AHRQ Health Services Research & Policy Fellow. She is a Fellow in the New York Academy of Medicine. Dr. Harris received her Master of Business Administration from the Cornell Johnson Graduate School of Management and Master of Science in Healthcare Leadership from Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences.
