The Collaborative Approach: Decreasing Surgical Supply Variation and Improving Outcomes

The application is being utilized to track vendor compliance, standardize equipment usage, and consult on surgeons’ health outcomes. It’s also being used for reviewing OR time, length of stay, and supply variation and determining if switching items resulting in less time in the OR will improve outcomes for the patient. This session will outline an innovative application that provides surgical supply insights which clearly and easily highlight utilization variation across physicians in multiple disciplines, allowing for data-driven actionable insights. Providers and administrators can quickly see the differences in their supply usage, and its impacts on cost, quality, and outcomes for a wide variety of procedure types. The development and rollout of turning data into quick and easy actionable insights through modern data analysis techniques and cross-functional team collaboration will be shared in this session, as will how the application improves cost, quality, and outcomes for our patients

Problem: Understanding surgical supply utilization is a problem for any hospital that performs surgeries or procedures. Ensuring contract compliance, good outcomes based on supplies used, and appropriate reimbursement are vital to the financial well-being and performance of a hospital. There was a need to develop an application to track this internally

Measurement: Development of dashboards that track metrics such as quantities and cost associated with case count, length of stay, supply details, reimbursement details by payer, facility, etc., and population data. The dashboards were developed to be drillable and comparable at many levels

Analysis: By weaving procedural supply data together with outcomes, financial, pharmaceutical, and equipment utilization data sets the supply utilization suite developed can identify variations in clinical supply usage and tie analysis together with outcomes and financial data in an easy-to-understand, comprehensive solution. The dashboards are updated daily

Implementation: Development of dashboards that track metrics such as quantities and cost associated with case count, length of stay, supply details, reimbursement details by payer, facility, etc., and population data. The dashboards were developed to be drillable and comparable at many levels
