Developing Healthcare Worker Infection Prevention and Control Competencies

Infection prevention and control practices are critical to safeguarding the health of patients and staff in healthcare settings and are key processes assessed in many regulatory and accreditation surveys.
During this session, attendees will learn about The Joint Commission’s new requirements for healthcare worker competencies in infection prevention and control processes. We will discuss how to identify processes that need documented competencies and strategies for successfully developing competencies that assess and document mastery of expected skills. This presentation will cover resources for developing competencies and related policies, and how to apply a hierarchical method for applying external guidance to organizational processes. We will also share ideas for collaborative development and implementation of competency development and implementation, focusing on potential roles for the infection prevention and quality teams, department leadership, process owners and organizational leadership. We will share tools and examples of successful competency development and implementation.
