Patient Safety Clinician – Audie Murphy Veterans Hospital

Catrina Rodriguez is a registered nurse from Inpatient Mental Heath (GLA/B). They are an Air Force security forces veteran who served two combat tours to Iraq and Afghanistan. Graduated from the University of the Incarnate Word in 2016 and did her leadership immersion in South Texas Veterans Healthcare System (GLA/B, 2 West, PACU, and OR). Demonstrating excellence in Mental Health, they were recommended for direct hire and started working at ALM VA in 2017. They volunteered to be the Hospital Based Inpatient Psychiatric Services (HBIPS) champion after QM identified some fallouts during their first year. Since then, Inpatient Mental Health Nursing had been meeting 100% on this measure and QM commended the unit for having staff do audits on all Inpatient Mental Health admissions as well as NPPI audits. They also assisted in preparing the unit with any survey visits and were instrumental in unit process improvement including organizing forms, and competencies, updating policies, and making sure everybody had access to provide safe patient care. They organized an orientation and preceptor binder that new nursing staff had utilized and proved to have helped them transition to the unit. They worked as a night shift Charge RN who had been a preceptor and champions for documentation audits.
