A Patient’s Guide to Strengthening Diagnostic Excellence Across a Health System

COVID-19 has highlighted and exacerbated a number of health disparities in the United States. Unfortunately, health disparities have long existed in diagnostic error and continue to negatively impact patient safety. One major contributor to the disparities in patient safety events is provider cognitive bias. In this session, participants will (1) walk through a case example of a patient safety event and identify the impact of clinician cognitive bias; (2) explore how systems-level change can be employed to combat diagnostic error; and (3) apply the cultural humility and community-oriented primary care frameworks to improve diagnostic error in health systems.
